GEO & AEO KPIs: How to Measure AI Optimization Metrics Image Cover

For businesses that have long relied on SEO to improve search visibility, the rise of AI Search introduces new ways to optimize brand presence online.

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) and Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) are becoming part of modern optimization strategies, complementing SEO by helping brands appear, get mentioned, and earn recommendations in AI-generated answers.

This shift also changes how performance is measured. While SEO typically focuses on rankings and organic traffic, GEO and AEO require additional metrics to assess a brand’s visibility and relevance in AI Search.

This article explores the key GEO and AEO KPIs you can use to measure performance and understand your brand’s visibility and impact across AI Search.

Why Do KPIs for AEO and GEO Matter?

GEO and AEO KPIs can help a business measure brand visibility in AI search results. Here are several reasons why you should pay attention to GEO and AEO KPIs:

  • Brand visibility is now also influenced by AI answers: As AI Search develops, users can now get answers directly from AI platforms without having to open many website pages. This makes brand visibility take a broader form, since a brand can appear through mentions, recommendations, or citations in AI answers.
  • Rankings and organic traffic need to be complemented with AI Search metrics: A brand can be mentioned or cited in AI answers without generating direct visits to its website.
  • SEO remains the foundation for Google AI Search: Google experts emphasize that SEO practices remain relevant for AI Overviews and AI Mode. There is no special optimization required for a page to appear in these features, but websites still need to follow technical SEO fundamentals.
  • KPIs need to be tied to business impact: Appearing in AI answers is one form of visibility, but it is not the end goal. Businesses also need to see whether that visibility contributes to referral traffic, engagement, leads, and even conversions.

Various KPIs for AEO and GEO

Each AEO and GEO KPI offers a different perspective on brand performance in AI Search. To ensure results remain consistent and comparable over time, use the same set of prompts, AI platforms, measurement period, and competitors.

Below are several GEO and AEO KPIs you can use to evaluate brand visibility and performance in AI Search:

1. AI Mention Rate

AI Mention Rate measures how often a brand is mentioned in AI-generated responses across all responses analyzed. This metric helps indicate whether a brand is recognized as relevant to a particular topic or query.

You can measure the success of a GEO campaign using the following formula:

AI Mention Rate = Number of brand mentions in AI ÷ Total AI responses analyzed × 100%

For example, out of 100 AI responses to the same set of prompts, your brand is mentioned in 30 responses. This means the AI mention rate is 30%.

This measurement should ideally be done on a set of prompts relevant to your products, services, industry, and stages of the customer journey. Also keep in mind that a mention does not always mean a citation. A brand can be mentioned in an answer without any particular website or page being used as a source.

2. AI Share Of Voice

AI share of voice (SOV) shows how often your brand is mentioned compared with the other brands that appear in AI responses for a particular topic or set of prompts. It is also often called brand mention share, and it describes the proportion of mentions a brand receives in AI responses. The formula is:

AI SOV = Number of brand mentions ÷ Total mentions across all brands analyzed × 100%

For example, if all brands across 100 AI responses receive a combined 500 mentions, and your brand receives 50 of them, your AI SOV is 10%.

To use this metric, you need to compare it against competitors and base it on a consistent set of prompts. That way, you can measure and track changes in share of search or digital visibility, rather than just the absolute number of mentions.

3. Citation

Unlike a mention, a citation shows that information from a brand or website was used as a source or reference in an AI answer. Here are some citation metrics to measure:

a. AI Citation Rate

AI citation rate measures how often AI responses include a citation from the domain or source you want to track. There is no single universal formula, because each platform and tool may use a different methodology. One approach you can use is:

AI Citation Rate = Number of responses with a citation from the domain ÷ Total responses analyzed × 100%

For example, out of 200 AI responses, 40 list a page from your domain as a source. Using this approach, the citation rate is 20%.

This metric is best read alongside AI mention rate. If your brand has a high number of mentions but a low number of citations, it may indicate that the brand is already known in certain contexts, but its content is not yet widely used as a source.

b. Cited Pages

Cited pages show which specific pages of a website are used as sources in AI responses. This metric helps businesses find out which content is referenced most often.

You can measure it by collecting all the URLs from the citations that appear, then ranking them by citation count. Tools such as Ahrefs and Semrush provide data on pages cited in AI responses.

For example, if the page </services/seo> receives 25 citations and the page </blog/seo-guide> receives 10 citations in the same period, both pages can be analyzed further to understand the topic, format, and information that make them frequently used as sources.

4. AI Referral Traffic

AI referral traffic refers to visits to a website that come from AI platforms. This metric helps connect visibility in AI Search with the traffic that actually reaches the website.

To measure it, you can use Google Analytics 4 and look at referral traffic sources from AI platforms. However, this data does not always capture the full influence of AI, since some users may return through direct visits, organic search, or other channels.

For this reason, AI referral traffic is best treated as one indicator, not the only factor in how to measure GEO/AEO success

5. Engagement

Once your business is getting traffic from AI, you also need to see whether those visits lead to interaction. Some metrics you can monitor in GA4 include engagement rate, engaged sessions, average engagement time, and key events.

GA4 also lets you create custom channel groups, including a grouping for traffic from AI assistants. With this approach, traffic from AI sources can be tracked in a more structured way in acquisition reports.

This GA4 data can also be combined with Looker Studio to build a dashboard that brings AI referral traffic, engagement, and conversion together in a single view.

6. Business Impact

GEO and AEO KPIs are not only used to measure brand visibility in AI Search, but also need to be tied to their impact on the business. This kind of measurement helps companies understand whether increased visibility and traffic from AI also generate business opportunities.

7. AI-Driven Leads

AI-driven leads measure the number of leads that come from traffic or user journeys involving AI Search. This metric can help companies see whether visibility on AI platforms generates business opportunities, rather than just increasing the number of mentions or citations.

You can measure it by linking traffic data from AI platforms with lead data in GA4 or your CRM. For B2B needs, companies can also distinguish between total leads and qualified leads so that AI Search's contribution to the pipeline can be analyzed more clearly.

Keep in mind that not every lead influenced by AI will be recorded as a direct AI referral. Users may discover a brand through AI, then return through organic search, direct traffic, or other channels before converting.

8. Conversion Rate

Conversion rate shows the percentage of users or sessions from AI Search that complete an action defined as a conversion. This can take the form of a form submission, demo request, sign-up, purchase, or another business action relevant to the website's goals.

The simple formula is:

AI Conversion Rate = Number of conversions ÷ Number of users or sessions × 100%

For example, if 1,000 sessions from AI result in 30 conversions, the resulting conversion rate is 3%.

Conversion rate is best analyzed together with AI referral traffic and AI-driven leads to see the relationship between visibility, traffic, and business outcomes. This approach helps companies evaluate the contribution of AI.

GEO vs AEO vs SEO KPIs: What's the Difference?

GEO, AEO, and SEO have different measurement focuses, although they work together as part of a broader search optimization strategy. GEO metrics measure brand visibility in generative AI answers, AEO focuses on a brand’s ability to appear as a direct answer, while SEO measures website performance in organic search results.

Here is a comparison of the key KPIs used to measure each optimization strategy:

Various tools can help you track GEO and AEO KPIs, from traffic and engagement to visibility, mentions, and citations. Here are the details:

1. Google Analytics 4

Google Analytics 4 (GA4) can be used to measure traffic, engagement, and conversions from AI platforms. GA4 provides an AI Assistant channel to help identify traffic from platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot. This data can also be combined with Looker Studio to build a dashboard that shows various GEO and AEO KPIs in a single view.

2. Ahrefs

Through Brand Radar, Ahrefs can help you track AI visibility, AI Share of Voice, and citations in AI Search results. The tool can also show which pages or domains are cited most often and compare your brand's visibility with competitors. This data can be used to understand where your brand stands and to find opportunities to improve visibility and citations.

3. Semrush

Semrush offers a range of AI Visibility metrics, such as mentions, citations, cited pages, cited sources, and Share of Voice. This data can help businesses understand how often their brand appears in AI answers and which pages are used as sources. Semrush also provides AI referral traffic reports that can be linked with GA4 data to analyze traffic from AI Search.

4. HubSpot AI Search Grader

HubSpot AI Search Grader can give you an overview of how your brand is represented by ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini. The tool evaluates several aspects, such as brand recognition, presence quality, sentiment analysis, and Share of Voice.
