Measuring the ROI of GEO and AEO isn't as simple as comparing optimization costs to the revenue generated. This is because the impact of optimization in the AI search space doesn't always show up directly as conversions.
GEO and AEO can influence a range of areas, from how often a brand appears in AI answers and how often it is cited and mentioned, to the traffic that comes from AI platforms. Therefore, ROI measurement needs to look beyond revenue.
So, which metrics can be used to calculate the success of GEO and AEO? And how to measure the ROI of GEO & AEO accurately within a business strategy? Let's find the full answers below.
Measuring ROI (Return on Investment) helps businesses find out whether their investment in GEO and AEO is delivering worthwhile results. However, measuring GEO & AEO ROI tends to be more complex than SEO ROI, because the impact of AI search isn't always directly visible.
Here are some reasons why it's important to pay attention to GEO & AEO ROI:

SEO and GEO/AEO are indeed closely related. A strong SEO foundation is still important for helping a brand build visibility in AI-based search. However, SEO metrics alone can't capture the full impact of GEO and AEO. There are several reasons to keep in mind:
In other words, SEO is indeed very helpful for a business website's performance in search engines, but to measure GEO ROI, you need to look beyond just rankings and organic traffic.
In general, ROI can be calculated by comparing the value generated against the investment cost incurred. The GEO ROI formula is as follows:
GEO & AEO ROI = (Value Generated from GEO/AEO - Optimization Cost) ÷ Optimization Cost × 100%
Optimization costs can include internal resources, freelancer or agency services, as well as the cost of tool subscriptions and monitoring platforms used.
However, it's also worth remembering that users can now discover and consider a brand through AI without visiting the website right away. This means they may perform a branded search, reach the website through direct traffic, or convert through another channel.
Therefore, GEO and AEO ROI measurement should not focus only on revenue that can be directly attributed. Businesses also need to look at other indicators that show the impact of optimization, such as increases in AI visibility, brand mentions, citations, AI referral traffic, leads, and conversions.
To get a more complete picture, GEO and AEO measurement can be divided into three layers: visibility metrics, content performance metrics, and business impact metrics. Here is the explanation:
The first layer answers a simple question: does your brand appear in AI answers?
At this stage, the measurement focus isn't only on the number of visits, but also on how often the brand appears and how AI represents that brand.
AI Share of Voice measures how often a brand appears in AI answers for a predefined set of queries, compared with competitors.
For example, your business can define 20 questions that potential customers frequently ask, then run them regularly on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, or other AI platforms. To measure this metric, note which brands appear in each answer, then compare your share against competitors.
The more often your brand shows up for relevant queries, the bigger your share of voice in AI search.
Citation Frequency measures how often a website or specific page is used as a source in AI answers.
This is different from a plain brand mention. A brand can be mentioned in an answer without any website page being used as a source. This metric is a better indicator of whether the website's content is being used to support AI answers.
This metric looks at whether AI correctly understands information about a brand, product, service, or related party.
For example, you can ask AI to explain what the company does, what products it offers, or how your product differs from competitors. Then, check whether the information provided is accurate.
If AI still misunderstands your brand's name, products, services, or positioning, it means there is still information that needs to be clarified across the business's digital ecosystem.

Once you know whether your brand appears, the next step is to find out how well AI can understand and use your content. Here are a few metrics to track:
LLM Readability Score is used to assess how easily content can be understood and processed by a large language model (LLM).
It looks at factors like content structure, clarity, unambiguous wording, and how the main points are presented.
Content with clear heading tags, direct answers, tables, lists, and a tidy information structure is easier to scan than long paragraphs with an unclear structure.
Query Fan-out Coverage looks at how well a page answers follow-up questions related to the main query.
For example, a user asks, "What is AEO?" After getting an answer, they might follow up with questions like "What's the difference between AEO and SEO?", "How do you measure AEO?", or "What tools are used?"
Content that covers the relationships between those questions comprehensively has better query fan-out coverage.
Schema validity measures whether the structured data on a website is implemented correctly and consistently.
Schema helps machines understand the context of a page, its entities, and the relationships between pieces of information across the website. However, a valid schema doesn't automatically get a page cited by AI. This metric is better used as one indicator of technical readiness within a GEO and AEO strategy.
This final layer connects AI visibility to business goals. The question is: does that visibility generate traffic, conversions, or business opportunities?
AI-referred traffic is website visits that come from links in AI answers or citations.
In GA4, traffic from platforms like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, or Claude can be tracked and grouped into a dedicated channel, making it easier to compare against organic traffic.
However, don't assume that all of AI's impact will show up as referrals. Users may see your brand in an AI answer and then come back through direct traffic or a branded search.
Once you know how much traffic comes from AI, measure how many visitors take an important action, such as filling out a form, requesting a demo, making a purchase, or contacting your business.
Here's the formula:
AI Conversion Rate = Number of conversions from AI sessions ÷ Total AI sessions × 100%
Compare the result with the conversion rates of other channels to understand the quality of the traffic coming from AI.
For B2B businesses, measurement can extend to the pipeline. This metric looks at the portion of the sales pipeline that had a touchpoint with AI search somewhere in the customer's journey.
For example, a potential customer discovers your brand through ChatGPT, then visits your website and fills out a form. That information can be recorded through a "How did you hear about us?" field, your CRM, or any other attribution method your company uses.

The success of GEO and AEO doesn't always show up right away in revenue. That's why your business also needs to set success indicators for each layer and monitor how they change over time.
Lapisan | KPI | Frekuensi Pengukuran | Indikator Kesuksesan |
| Visibility | Share of mentions across a set of potential customer questions | Monthly | Growing steadily compared to competitors |
| Visibility | Citation Rate | Monthly | Citations growing faster than mentions |
Visibility
| Fetches by AI agents | Monthly | Fetches concentrated on the best-performing pages |
| Visibility | Impressions on zero-click queries | Weekly | Impressions increasing, with an average position under 5 |
Revenue
| Leads who cite AI as their source of information | Monthly | AI-sourced leads begin appearing by the second quarter |
Keep in mind that each KPI has a different timeline. Visibility may be trackable early on, while revenue may take longer. So don't jump to the conclusion that your strategy has failed just because revenue hasn't changed while visibility metrics are only starting to move.
