We will start with a note that cmlabs has no cooperative relationship and does not favor a particular online publisher, whether it's Detikcom or Tribunnews. We conducted this analysis for research purposes and opened further discussions so that we could learn together, especially in the fields of SEO and marketing.
Indonesia has many digital publishers nowadays, ranging from local level publishers, high-quality online publishers, to digital publishers classified in the big-media level, with big names such as Kompas com, Tempo co, Tribunnews, Liputan6, to Detikcom. In this case, Tribunnews and Detik are more interesting to discuss because these two digital publishers have been competing for years, primarily based on an analysis of cmlabs in the last five years, from the beginning of 2015 to the end of 2019.
That year, Tribunnews finally replaced Detik, who had been the No. 1 digital publisher in Indonesia for years, based on Alexa ranking.
Based on a brief discussion of cmlabs with a Detikcom team, the situation forced the company to do all the strategy to regain its initial position. Eventually, they succeeded in getting Tribunnews back to position #2, but that didn't last long. A few weeks later Tribunnews returned to first place, until today.
This discussion is increasingly compelling. Then, is it true that Tribunnews did win the competition? Specifically, from an SEO point of view?
Today, the estimated keywords successfully captured from the articles published by the Tribunnews Com domain are around 7 million to 9 million keywords, while Detik ranges from 4 million to 6.5 million keywords. We took this data at the same time, in May 2020.
Regardless of the number of requests or search volumes of each keyword, it's clear that Detik lags far behind Tribunnews, especially from SEO strategies and targeted content.
After we dig deeper, it is proven that Tribunnews had indeed outrun Detikcom based on the success rate of content planning and organic traffic projections for each publisher.
Based on Ahrefs ranking, Detikcom holds on 2781 and Tribunnews follows with 3210. Then, why is that so? Didn't Tribunnews manage to capture far more keywords?
In another article, we will discuss in more detail the Google algorithm and how the existing metrics affect ranking calculations, including the Ahrefs method to rank domains around the world.
It is true that, based on the ranking, Detikcom currently has a better score. However, based on the organic traffic that they managed to capture, we estimate Tribunnews obtained 30% to 45% higher.
Both subtopics are undoubtedly interesting because each group equally needs them. Besides, these two questions are also tough to answer. In the comment section, you are free to express your opinions and provide solutions for both online publishers.
