Web Framework

Last updated: Jul 18, 2023

What Is Web Framework?

A web framework is software that is used to build and develop applications and websites.

Generally, it provides various features that can support application or website development, such as:

  1. Routes management
  2. HTTP request and response processing
  3. Integration with the database
  4. Sessions management

By using a framework, developers do not need to build all website components from scratch. As a result, there is an efficiency of time, cost, and energy in spelling.

The Differences Between Framework and Native

In website development, there are two types of programming languages that are generally used: framework and native. The difference between the two is:

Framework

  • Suitable for building applications.
  • More stable and reliable.
  • Facilitate system design and maintenance.
  • Consistent code reading.

Native

  • Built by the programmers themselves, which makes the documentation sometimes unclear.
  • Flexible implementation of the difficulty scale.
  • Risk of a difference in writing source code.
  • There is no security system, so you have to build your own.

Benefits of Using a Web Framework

This framework has a number of significant benefits for website development. Here are some of them:

1. Make the Development Process Easier

The web framework provides a working structure as well as ready-to-use components. This makes it very easy for developers when:

  1. Running projects.
  2. Set the application structure.
  3. Implement various features, such as route management, input validation, user authentication, and others.

Thus, developers can focus on accelerating the business development process.

2. Facilitate Application Debugging and Maintenance

Another benefit of using a framework is the ease of debugging and maintaining applications.

This is because this framework is equipped with features that are able to find and fix errors and monitor application performance.

Examples of features commonly found in the framework are debugging, logging, and application monitoring.

By using these features, application maintenance will become easier because of the organized structure of the framework.

3. Reducing Code Length

By using a web framework, developers can reduce the amount of code they have to write.

In addition, the use of conventions and design patterns in this framework also helps reduce code length.

4. Improve Database Quality

One of the superior features of a framework is its integration with the database. Developers can access the database through ORM (object relational mapping).

Compared to writing SQL queries manually, accessing the database through the database is much easier and faster.

In addition, this framework is usually equipped with a database migration feature to make it easier to manage database schema changes and maintain data structure consistency.

5. Strengthen Security

Websites must have strong security to protect against CSRF (cross-site request forgery), XSS (cross-site scripting), and SQL injection attacks.

To achieve this, using a web framework is the right step. This is because this framework has great built-in security.

In addition, this framework also provides tools for validating user input, user authentication, and managing access permissions, which can improve website security more easily and efficiently.

Various Web Frameworks

Web frameworks can be divided into two types: backend frameworks and frontend frameworks. Here's an explanation of each:

1. Backend Framework

This type of framework is specifically designed for server development. Backend frameworks usually come with tools and components that developers can use to manage business logic, access databases, manage HTTP requests, and build APIs.

There are several backend frameworks that are often used, such as:

  1. Django: On GitHub, this backend framework has a rating of 68.1k and a favorable percentage of 53.10%. This popularity is obtained because Django is very reliable in terms of performance, cyber security, and scalability. Several big companies, such as Instagram and Google, use Django as their backend framework.
  2. Ruby on Rails: Still used by many big companies, such as Airbnb, GitHub, and Shopify, even at the age of more than fifteen years old. This backend framework written in Ruby is known for its ability to create high-speed applications.
  3. Laravel: This kind of backend framework is written in PHP. Laravel focuses on the beauty of syntax and the ease of developing web applications.

2. Frontend Framework

Unlike the previous types, the frontend framework is used to develop display and user interaction in web applications.

This framework provides ready-to-use UI components, tools for state management, and the ability to connect with the backend via APIs.

There are several frontend frameworks that are popular among developers, including:

  1. React: Many developers consider React to be the best web framework for building applications with a component-based architecture. It's understandable because the Facebook-developed framework has the ability to build dynamic and reusable user interfaces.
  2. Angular: This frontend framework is categorized as a heavyweight framework. This is because Angular provides a powerful structure and tools for developing component-based applications. Many large companies use this framework.
  3. Vue.js: Compared to Angular, Vue.js has a lighter character and is easy to learn. This frontend framework adopts a flexible approach and can be easily integrated into projects.
