Reindex Google Search

Last updated: Jun 20, 2024

How to Reindex Google Search?

To ensure your content appears in search results, search engines like Google crawl your website's pages for information. So, reindexing becomes crucial when making updates, such as adding new content or altering elements to strengthen your topic cluster.

While Google usually re-indexes URLs upon detecting updates, the process may take time. If your URL has been crawled but not indexed, you can request reindexing from Google.

However, before knowing how to recrawl a website, you need to understand the following facts:

  • There is a daily limit on the number of index requests that can be submitted to Google. So if you have a lot of pages that need to be reindexed, you can submit a sitemap to Google.
  • Even if you have submitted a request, there is no guarantee that your page will appear in the Google index.
  • The re-indexing process usually takes about a day or longer.

If you have paid attention to the points above, see below for how to reindex Google search for your site.

1. Submitting an Index Request Through Google Search Console

The first step of how to reindex Google search is to submit an index request. You can follow these steps to submit it:

  • Go to the Google Search Console page.
  • Select Property from the top left menu.
  • Enter the URL to reindex and press Enter.
  • You will see a pop-up with information on URL data search from Google Index.
  • Click Request Indexing to submit a re-indexing request to Google.
  • Check if your URL has been indexed by Google.

2. Adding a Sitemap to the Google Search Console

The next way how to reindex Google search is to add a sitemap. Here are the steps.

  • Go to the Google Search Console page.
  • Select Property on the top left menu.
  • Click the Sitemaps menu.
  • Enter the URL with /sitemap.xml at the end of the URL, then click Submit.
  • If the “Success” appears, the sitemap has been sent.

3. Adding Relevant Internal Links

The next step to reindex Google search is to include relevant internal links. This will help Google to find new content that you upload.

To add internal links, copy the URL of the page you want to index and paste it into the existing content on the website.

The more internal links that are relevant to each other, the faster Google will find the page to be reindexed.

4. Getting Relevant Backlinks

Besides adding internal links to your content, getting backlinks from other sites can also help the reindexing process.

Backlinks act as a "voice" for your content, so Google will dive into your page. Furthermore, getting quality backlinks from high-authority websites can eventually speed up the re-indexing process.

How to Speed Up the Google Reindex Process?

The reindex process varies in duration, usually in a matter of days. However, you can speed up the reindex process. Here’s how to do it.

1. Using Fetch as Google

The first way is to submit the URL in Webmaster Tools under the Crawl menu and select "Fetch as Google."

2. Using a Sitemap

Like the reindex methods described above, using a sitemap can help you do recrawl or reindex.

For search engines to identify newly published or updated content, you need to include the

<lastmod> tag and the last time of the update. That way, search engines can see that there is an updated article and trigger Google to reindex.

3. Using Google Ping

Google ping is a tool that can inform Google to visit the URL it wants to re-index.

However, be careful about using Google Ping as Google may view the activity as spam and lower a website's ranking in search results if done excessively.

4. Inserting Internal Link of Content to be Reindexed to Relevant Content

Then, like the reindex method above, you can insert internal links to the content to be reindexed into relevant articles. That way, Google will know that the article needs to be indexed.

This method also has a good impact on the SEO strategy implemented. It should be noted that the internal links included must be set to dofollow.

5. Share Articles to Social Media

Finally, you can share the article on social media. Google will be "interested" in visiting the article, especially if the topic is of interest to many people.
