Redirect

Last updated: Aug 25, 2023

What Is URL Redirect?

A URL redirect is a technique of redirecting a URL to a different URL. In a website, the function of a redirect is to notify the visitors and search engines that the web page has been redirected to a new location or page.

In HTML, a URL redirection is usually indicated by using the HTTP status code 3xx. The most common type of HTTP status code used when implementing redirects are

HTTP Status Code 301

A 301 redirect is a type of URL redirect that is permanent. Usually used when you decide to move all content from the old domain to the new website domain. This type of redirect allows visitors who access the old website URL to still be able to reach your new website URL.

HTTP Status Code 302

A 302 redirect is a temporary type of URL redirection. You can use this type of redirect when the web page is under serious repair. For example, when you revamp your website, then you want to redirect visitors to a different domain until the website is complete.

When Do You Need a Website Redirect?

If it is used properly, URL redirects are very beneficial for your SEO strategy. Some of the conditions that make you need to redirect are as follows:

  • Migration to a new domain has occurred - you can use a URL redirect to make the transition from the old website to the new website easier
  • There is a URL change - when content is removed or a URL changes, you can redirect users to a new URL.
  • Have multiple domains - if you have multiple domain addresses to display identical pages, then you can specify a canonical URL to redirect users to the primary domain.
  • There is duplicate content - similar content can confuse search engines in showing relevant results, it would be better if you remove one of the content and redirect visitors to the right web page.

Benefits of URL Redirects for SEO

The main benefit of redirects is to ensure that users can access information from a website. The benefits of a redirect are as follows:

  • Ensure the website can be accessed by users
  • Improve user experience
  • Inform search engines to show your new URL
  • Maintaining website ranking from old domain to new domain

Redirect Checker

Things to avoid when implementing redirects are URL redirects that are too long and redirect loops. Both of these things can make it difficult for visitors to access information on your website.

In addition, it will also inhibit search engines from crawling. It is possible that search engines cannot reach the intended page and will stop crawling your web page. Of course, this can have a bad influence on the implementation of SEO on your website.

You can check the redirect chain using the Redirect Checker from cmlabs. This tool will help you to see links that are linked to a URL, complete with the HTTP Status Code. This tool can be accessed for free to inspect redirects in-depth, up to 5 redirect chains.
