Google Releases March 2024 Core Update and Spam Policy

Cover image: Google announced its latest core update and spam policies on March 5, 2024.

To improve the quality of content appearing in searches, Google has announced the March 2024 core update and spam policy. Check it out here!

Key Takeaways
  • Google announced its latest core update and spam policies on March 5, 2024.
  • This update aims to combat spam content and increase the amount of useful content in search results.
  • The March 2024 update is more complex than before, so Google requires one month to enforce its new policies.
  • These policies will take effect on May 5, 2024.

On March 5, 2024, Google announced its core update and latest spam policies. This update aims to improve search quality and reduce the appearance of content intentionally created to generate clicks.

In addition to the core update, Google also announced new policies related to spam that will impact the quality of search results. For more information on Google's updates and new policies, see below.

What Happened with the March 2024 Core Update?

Google revealed that the core update for March 2024 is more complex than expected, as the search engine has made several changes to the system to identify the suitability of content.

Google employs a variety of systems to assess the credibility of information by enhancing the core ranking system in order to display more valuable search results through innovative approaches.

Since this update is more intricate, Google may take up to a month to fully implement it. During the update process, there will be more fluctuating rankings compared to regular core updates.

Regarding this update, web content creators do not need to do anything special as long as they continue to produce content that complies with Google's guidelines.

Introducing Google's Latest Spam Policy

In addition to releasing the core update for March 2024, Google also announced a new policy regarding spam to identify practices that harm search results.

Some practices mentioned by Google include the abuse of expired domains, the abuse of scaled content, and the abuse of site reputation. Here's a more detailed explanation of this policy.

Misuse of Expired Domains

The misuse of expired domains involves the practice of purchasing old domains and repurposing them to manipulate search result rankings. Subsequently, individuals will create content that is not beneficial to users in these domains.

This practice is intentionally carried out by a group of individuals so that visitors can only find their site through search engines.

For example, an individual purchases a domain previously used for a health website. They then change it to an online gambling site and produce low-quality content to rank high through the previous site's reputation.

As a result, users searching for health-related queries will find the gambling site at the top of the rankings and provide traffic to the gambling site if they visit it.

Abuse of Scaled Content

Another spam practice of concern to Google is the abuse of scaled content. This practice involves creating numerous pages that are not useful or original for users to manipulate rankings in search results.

This policy is a continuation of Google's previously released spam policy regarding automatically generated content so that search engines can take strong action against the abuse of scaled content.

Misuse of Site Reputation

The final new policy is the misuse of site reputation, where this practice is carried out by third parties by publishing pages that do not involve the first party (host site) to manipulate rankings in search results and leverage site reputation.

Third-party pages include sponsor pages, advertisements, partners, or other pages not associated with the primary purpose of the host site or created without host supervision and do not provide meaningful value to users.

Google will not view all third-party content as violations. Instead, this policy applies to content hosted without supervision from the host site and created to deceive search result rankings.

Google gives website owners time to fix their sites and prepare for this update for one month, so this policy will take effect from May 5, 2024.

With these new policies, Google aims to maximize content quality, enhance spam eradication efforts, and ensure users can access worthy and beneficial content in search results.
