What is a hyperlink? In general, it is a link feature frequently found in website articles or presentation documents. You've probably heard this term before, haven't you?

The main hyperlink function is to connect access from one file to another to help readers obtain more comprehensive information.

There are several types of hyperlinks that you can take advantage of. To discover more about what is a hyperlink, its functions, types, examples, and how to create them, be sure to read this article!

What Is A Hyperlink?

Figure 1: Illustration of a hyperlink on a web page

A hyperlink is a specific link that serves to connect a particular section on a website page, program, or presentation document to a different page.

By clicking on this link, you will be directed straight to the linked content or page. In its implementation, this type of link can appear in various forms, such as clickable text, images, or other elements within a document.

On What Platforms Hyperlinks Can Be Used?

If you already know what is a hyperlink, then you might wonder on what platforms these links can be used.

In general, this link feature can be implemented and widely used across various digital platforms, such as:

  • World Wide Web (WWW): This type of link is commonly found on websites. Almost every web page typically contains hyperlinks leading to other pages, external sites, or other resources.
  • Office Documents: Word processing programs like Microsoft Word or Google Docs also provide specific features for adding links to text documents.
  • Presentation Media: In Microsoft PowerPoint or Google Slides, the hyperlink function is to link slides and direct viewers to external resources such as websites, images, or videos.
  • Software Applications: Various software applications like Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets also utilize these links to provide quick access to specific cells or data ranges.

Hyperlink Functions

As a functional linking feature, it can maximize user experience.

In web development, for instance, strategically placing hyperlinks that are appropriate, contextual, and relevant can enhance the user experience while adding value to SEO.

To understand better what is a hyperlink and its functions, see the following lists:

1. Facilitating Access for Readers

By using hyperlinks, users can connect related information without consolidating all content into one.

For instance, in a presentation document, users can link terms or concepts on a slide to the main source that provides more detailed explanations.

Thus, readers can understand a context without having to manually search for those terms.

2. Linking Between Files

If you already understand what is a hyperlink, then you must know that its main function is to link one file to another and streamline the navigation process with just one click.

This type of link also allows integration between documents. For example, when creating an Excel document, you can link various files or worksheets related to a specific project or topic.

3. Facilitating Maintenance and Updates

Some types of hyperlinks also make the maintenance and updating of documents more efficient.

For instance, if there are changes to a report that uses hyperlinks to external data or information, you only need to modify the link_location address within the formula without editing the entire document.

4. Maximizing SEO

So, what is a hyperlink and its role in SEO practices? In the context of SEO, the main function of this link is to enhance the visibility and ranking of a web page in search results.

In web content such as articles or blogs, text with links is known as anchor text. In SEO practice, search engines use anchor text as an indicator to determine the content of the linked page.

Therefore, choosing relevant keywords within these links is believed to help improve a website's ranking in search results pages.

Hyperlink Formula

Knowing what is a hyperlink is not enough. You need to also learn the formula for creating such a link. Below is the hyperlink formula.

=HYPERLINK(link_location, [file_name])

This formula introduces two key parameters:

  • Link_location: Serving as the primary element, this parameter necessitates the insertion of the URL or file address that is intended to be linked. Whether it be a webpage, a specific file, or an external resource, e.g. https://www.contohwebsite.com.
  • File_name: This parameter, although optional, adds a layer of user-friendly accessibility. It represents the text visible to users, functioning as the link label. If left unfilled, the platform defaults to using the link_location as the visible text.

Types of Hyperlinks

According to the book "Web Programming with PHP-MySQL for Beginners" by Rusli et al. (2019), this type of link can be categorized into two types: Absolute Address and Relative Address.

However, in line with technological advancements, three additional types of hyperlinks have emerged. Here is a comprehensive explanation of each type.

1. Absolute Address

Absolute address is the type that refers to a fixed and unchanging address. One main characteristic is the inclusion of a complete and specific address of a linked resource, including protocols such as HTTPFTP, domain, and the path to a page.

When using an absolute address, there is no ambiguity about the destination, instilling confidence in users that they will be directed to the correct place upon clicking the link.

Hyperlink example: https://www.websiteexample.com/about-us/our-member.html

  • Advantages: Accessible from any page and at any time, as long as the destination page is available.
  • Disadvantages: Time-consuming to manually type the entire URL.

2. Relative Address

The relative address is a type that provides a relative path or route from a webpage. In relative addresses, you won't find protocols or domains. Consider the following example.

Hyperlink example for relative address: /about-us/our-member.html

  • Advantages: Does not require internet access to write it and allows links to remain accessible even if the hosting server changes.
  • Disadvantages: Cannot be accessed from outside the website; the link is only accessible through the same webpage.

3. Link Section

What is a hyperlink section? This type directs users to a specific section within a webpage. When a web page has multiple sections or content, users can utilize the link section to navigate directly to a specific part without the need for lengthy scrolling.

Hyperlink example: https://www.examplewebsite.com/about-us#our-team

  • Advantages: Users can easily find content sections without lengthy navigation.
  • Disadvantages: The link is only accessible on the same webpage.

4. Text Hyperlink

This type is often found in web content like articles or blogs. It is a blue-colored text that contains a link to another file or webpage.

When you click this blue text, you will then be redirected to another webpage or document.

  • Advantages: Attracts user attention due to its distinct color from other text.
  • Disadvantages: Poorly planned text color may clash with the webpage background, making it harder to read.

5. Image Hyperlink

Commonly displayed in image format on a webpage, this type can be easily recognized when the cursor transforms into a pointer when hovering over an image.

When the cursor changes shape over an image, it signifies that clicking the image will direct you to a specific webpage.

Example: "<a href="https://www.websiteexample.com"><img src="imageexample.jpg" alt="example"></a>"

  • Advantages: Users can easily visit the embedded URL resource and facilitate integration on the webpage.
  • Disadvantages: Image resolution may decrease.

How to Make A Hyperlink

Below are several methods on how to make a hyperlink on various platforms, ranging from word processing applications to HTML websites. Here are the details:

1. Microsoft Word

  • Open Word and select the document you want to work on.
  • Choose the text or object.
  • Click on "Insert" > select "Links" > choose "Hyperlink."

  • If you want to link to a webpage, select "Existing File or Web Page." Then, enter the URL of the target page.
  • To add a hyperlink to an object, click "Insert" > select "Links" > choose "Hyperlink."

3. Microsoft Excel

  • Open Excel and select the document you want to work on.
  • Choose the cell you want.
  • Enter the formula, for example: =HYPERLINK(C5,B5).
