In addition,  obtaining the registration number signifies that the company has undergone the necessary legal procedures and is officially recognized as a registered entity in Malaysia.

Malaysia Business Registration Number Format

Starting from 11th October 2019, a new format for business registration numbers was introduced for entities registering with the SSM in Malaysia.

This change aimed to streamline the registration number format, replacing the various formats previously generated by the system.

Additionally, the new format consists of 12 numbers, and entities registering on or after 11th October are provided with both the new and old number formats for their records. This update ensures consistency and clarity in business registration numbers moving forward.

How to Get a Business Registration Number

After you understand what is business registration number in Malaysia and its format, now it’s time for you to learn how to get a business registration number in Malaysia. Here are 2 easy steps on how to get a business registration number in that country:

1. Choose a Business Structure and Reserve a Company Name

In Malaysia, obtaining a business registration number involves several steps.

Firstly, you need to choose from seven main business entities, such as sole proprietorship, partnership, limited liability partnership, private limited company, public limited company, branch office, or representative office.

Once you've decided on the business structure, the next step is to select a company name and conduct a thorough name check with the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM) to ensure it's unique and not too similar to existing names.

After confirming the availability of the name, you can proceed to submit the name reservation request to the SSM. When the SMM give you approval, the chosen name will be reserved for your company's use.

2. Register with the SMM

To get your business up and running, it's important to register with the SSM within 30 days of getting the green light on your company name.

This involves gathering some paperwork, like the constitution (if you have one), a declaration by a director or promoter before appointment, and a declaration of compliance.

Once everything's in order, you'll need to submit your application to the SSM for review. If all goes well and your application is approved, the SSM will send you a Notice of Registration to your registered email.

In addition, this notice will have the date of your registration and your business registration number. After this, you can purchase your Certificate of Incorporation (Section 17) to officially complete the process.
