The President of the United States (US), Joe Biden, has stated that he will sign a bill forcing ByteDance, the company that owns TikTok, to sell the social media platform if it wishes to avoid its usage being banned in the country.
This bill empowers the president, through the FBI, to designate social media applications deemed as threats to national security if they are under the control of foreign adversaries. If TikTok remains under the ownership of the Chinese company, the video-sharing social media will be blocked from use.
On March 14, 2024, this bill was approved by the US Legislative Body, with 352 votes in favor and 65 votes against. President Joe Biden stated that he would sign this bill if approved by Congress.
Why Is TikTok Blocked in the US?
TikTok is being blocked because the US government perceives this social media platform as a tool for Chinese propaganda. Furthermore, the US government intends to compel ByteDance to divest the application. They are concerned that this Chinese-owned application may access the data of US users.
If this regulation is enacted, ByteDance has 165 days to divest the application. If not complied with, app stores managed by Apple, Alphabet, Google, and others will not be able to legally provide TikTok or web hosting services for applications under ByteDance.
How Did the CEO of TikTok's Respond?
Shou Zi Chew, CEO of TikTok, uploaded his response to this bill on TikTok's official account on March 14, 2024. He explained that TikTok is always committed to safeguarding the security of its users' data and affirmed that this social media platform is free from data manipulation.
Moreover, he also emphasized that with the blocking of TikTok, creators and small businesses would have to dig deeper into their pockets to find alternative platforms, putting more than 300,000 jobs in the US at risk.
Shou added that they will continue to strive their best to maintain TikTok's existence in the US, including exercising their legal rights. He also urged users of this application to continue advocating for their constitutional rights.
What’s the Impact?
This blocking will certainly have a significant impact on advertising companies targeting Gen Z. This is because many young generations in the US use TikTok and admit to preferring it over Google.
In addition to being widely favoured, TikTok's presence has also empowered over 7 million businesses in the US and has become a highly influential application for small businesses in the United States.
