news headline image
Google has consistently been refining the search interface to make it simpler. This time, Google has removed indented results, which allowed users to find multiple results from the same domain. Here's the news.

To simplify the search interface, Google has decided to remove indented results from SERP. Indented results are one of the SERP features that group results from the same website. Here's the information.

Key Takeaways
  • Google has removed indented results, one of Google SERP's features.

  • This was done to simplify search results.

  • The impact of this removal is that users may encounter multiple results from the same domain within a single SERP.

In September 2021, Google introduced a new SERP feature known as "indented results" with the aim of enhancing user experience. This feature could group search results from a single domain, making it easier for users to navigate search results.

However, recently, Google announced the official removal of this feature. For more detailed information, read this article to the end.

Announcement of Indented Result Removal

The removal of the SERP display signifies significant Google volatility. This instability led Google to design a series of major updates to simplify search results. Previously, Google had removed rich results How-To and FAQ for the same reasons.

Previously, Google displayed indented results in search results as a core SERP feature that helped users find information more efficiently. However, Google has now changed its approach by regrouping search results for websites that appear more than once in SERPs.

Google Search Liaison explained this decision on Twitter, stating, “We stopped doing 'indented results' a few weeks ago, and it's unrelated to the core update. Especially with continuous scroll, it wasn't as helpful as in the past. Our site diversity system still works to generally show only two results from the same site in the top results, though — as has long been the case.”

Here is an overview before and after the removal of indented results:

Impact of the Changes

Google's change in approach has raised some concerns. One issue that has arisen is that on some search queries, more than two results appear for non-branded results. This contradicts Google's intention to limit the display of a maximum of two results from the same site.

Some argue that they have found seven identical web pages appearing in a single SERP. This is considered disruptive and damages the diversity of search results.

However, some argue that this is not a problem as long as the displayed pages are genuinely relevant to the query.

This indicates that Google has made many changes to prioritize the user experience during searches. What is your opinion?
